Christian Idiodi

Partner at Silicon Valley Product Group (SVPG)

Christian Idiodi is a partner at Silicon Valley Product Group with Marty Cagan. He also started the Innovate Africa Foundation, a nonprofit that teaches people on the continent how to do product work. A product manager, in his words, wakes up on behalf of someone else to solve a problem for them. It has to be done well enough that they give something back, which he calls a certificate of appreciation: revenue, engagement, loyalty or references.

The Reference Customer Method

Product-market fit is not a score. It is a count of people who will put their reputation behind you.

A really effective way to understand how to build something people actually want and solve real problems is this idea of pick reference customers. And I really like this word reference, which is not just they're going to help you build a thing, but they're also become a reference to future customers.

Disagreements

Count named advocates, or measure the population?

Christian Idiodi

sets the bar at a countable set of specific people, six to eight in B2B and twenty-five in consumer, who will personally put their reputation behind the product. Not signups and not a satisfaction score, a named list.

Sean Ellis

reads fit from a survey across active users, with 40 percent answering very disappointed as the line. A hand-picked group of advocates is, by construction, the most favourable sample you could have drawn.

  • Value risk is the most important and most overlooked; spend disproportionate time validating that people will actually buy or choose the solution.

Principles

  • Product management is fundamentally about waking up on behalf of someone else to solve their problems

Success is measured by the customer's willingness to give something back in return

    The essence of product management

  • Doing the product management job is the IC's responsibility; getting better at the craft is the manager's coaching job.

High-performing teams require dedicated coaches on the sideline, just like sports; managers who only manage process fail to raise the talent bar.

  • Product management influence is competence-based: the person who best represents the customer, data, industry and business earns the right to decide what to build.

Without demonstrated competence, teams and executives will not trust the PM and will revert to sales- or HiPPO-driven decisions.
